Flyfishing for sea run brown trout in saltwater is very popular in Norway. Finally it seems like the season has started.

Mai 1st. Sea trout season in saltwater is the start of the season for a lot of Scandinavian fly fishermen. This year the start of the season in my area, which is within a two hour drive from Oslo, has been slow. This is probably due to a cold March and a late spring. The season is already a few weeks old for a lot of people, but I have only been out the two last weekends. We catch some fish, but most of them are either too thin or too short to keep. The shorter ones are usually in a very good condition however. My friend Sjur (Shure) caught two very nice trout on Friday, 1.5 kg and 2.2 kg. The flies we use at the moment are mainly small fish imitations. Sjur has been using orange and white Jiggys, I have been using chartreuse and white Clousers. The sizes have been around 5-7 cm. Sjur is trying out a new pontoon boat called Skykomish Sunrise from Dave Scadden this year. This is the Rolls Royce of pontoon boats. One of the great things about the boat is that you can stand on it while fishing. There is a platform under the seat that you can slide forward together with a bar you can lean on. We will probably see few of these boats here in Scandinavia because of the price. Most of my friends and I use the pontoon boat called Lake Placid from Waterskeeter. This is a very good boat and will be good enough for most people. It is very important to use boats with frames of aluminium if you want to use them in saltwater. Sjur and I started out with boats with steel frames and they rusted from day one. Now is the time to get out and try to catch a sea trout. All flyfishermen and women need to practice before the real season starts and this is a fun way to do it.

Flyfishing

Fly fishing is a fascinating form of fishing. Small, almost weightless artificial ”bait”, the thing we call a fly, is presented for the fish, hoping it will mistake it for the real thing. Se portfolio »

Most of the canoes you see, zig zag along on the water in slow motion, and if you watch them from the shore it is almost impossible to tell where they are heading. Se portfolio »
