Books
I have through the years written 10 books, 8 about fly fishing and two about canoeing (canadian canoes). All my books have been illustrated with a lot of pictures, mainly shot by me. My first book was Vi binder fluer (We tie flies) in 1986, the book was based on a series of articles in the magazine Jakt og Fiske (Hunting and fishing). The book has been sold in more than 10 000 copies and that is considered very good in Norway. It is still an ideal beginners book on fly tying. My book Imitasjoner (Imitations) was translated to Swedish and the first edition of Kanoboka (The canoeing book) translated to Danish.

I have been fly fishing since 1961, and started writing about fly fishing in 1975. I have written articles for the following magazines: Alt om Fiske, Villmarksliv, Jakt og Fiske, Flugfiske i Norden, Fiskejournalen, Sportsfiskeren, International Fly Fisher, Trim og Trening and Padling. I have written a chapter for the Norwegian version of Gjedde (Pike) by Olle Tørnblom, written texts for Sportsfiskerens leksikon (Sportsfisherman’s encyclopedia) Kunnskapsforlaget, and a chapter with pictures for the big 5 binder book series Jakt, Fiske og Friluftsliv. My pictures have also been used in several catalogs, such as catalogs from the Norwegian hook manufacturer Mustad, Tundra outdoor and the American paddle manufacturer Zaveral Racing Equipment. 15 of my pictures were used in the book Canoe Racing by Peter Heed and Dick Mansfield.
New book this year: Streamer Naturforlaget A/S This is a book about streamer fishing for almost all the species of fish we have in Scandinavia that can be caught on a fly rod, in fresh and salt water. Everything from brown trout that has the main focus, to pike, perch, sea bass, cod, sea run brown trout etc. In addition to this there is a long chapter on tropical fly fishing for fish found in the waters around the gulf of Mexico. The book has information so general that it applies to every country in Europe as well as the US. My hope is that it will be translated to English, and maybe the other Scandinavian languages and German as well. The book contains a lot of streamer patterns and step by step photos of some of them. Even a beginner will be able to tie the flies in the book.
Fluefiske fra A-X (Fly fishing from A-X) Landbruksforlaget This book is about fly fishing from A-X, but not all the way to Z. This is the book for the beginner as well as a person who has been fly fishing for a while, but who might not have quite got the knack of it. Even experienced fly fishers can find a lot of useful information in the book, especially in the entomology part. My ambition was to write the book I wish I had when I started out fly fishing. It has been inspired among others by Selective Trout and Fly Fishing Strategy by Doug Swisher and Carl Richards. Two of my other books Fisk med flue! (Fish with a fly!) and Imitasjoner (Imitations) has been assembled to one in this book, rewritten and a lot of information added. The book contains chapters on choosing the right equipment, casting, strategy, entomology, imitations etc. It is the book to buy for a beginner.
Kanoboka (The canoeing book) 2nd edition Naturforlaget A/S In 1996 my wife Laila and I had Kanoboka published. In 2004 the book was published again under the same name, but very different. The text has been rewritten and there is a large addition with canoeing routes in Norway and Sweden in addition to three more exotic ones in the USA. The US ones are, through Big Bend National Park on the Rio Grande, Labyrinth Canyon on Green River in Utah and canoeing in the Everglades National Park in Florida. Almost all the pictures in the book are new ones and in colour. The book tells you almost everything you need to know from the day you start thinking about buying a canoe until you plan expeditions. Laila and I have been canoeing for 30 years. During 20 of those years I have been training for and taken part in canoe marathons, mostly in Sweden, but I have also done the General Clinton 70 miler 6 times and several other races in the US. With the book there is a free DVD (courtesy of Aktiv Fritid A/S, importer of We-no-nah canoes to Norway, and Bergans A/S, manufacturer of Ally folding canoes). In this DVD we show you how to paddle and steer the canoe. The DVD alone is in our opinion worth the price of the book if you are among the many canoeists that zig zag along in slow motion. Two people in a good canoe should be able to keep up with one person in a sea kayak if they have the proper technique. The book has chapters on choosing the canoe, choosing the right paddle, paddling technique (going straight and turning), running rivers, other equipment like PFDs, canoeing with kids, the solo canoe, fishing from a canoe, tripping, outdoor gear, navigation, competing etc. We hope some publishers read this and would like to translate the book. The DVD can easily be overdubbed to English by us for an international market.
Vi binder fluer (We tie flies) Landbruksforlaget. This book is ”still going strong” after 20 years. More than 10 000 people have learned to tie flies by this book. The book is a small book with line drawings showing how to do every step of the tying process. Line drawings are in many peoples opinion the best way to show beginners the steps in fly tying. Fisk med flue. Landbruksforlaget. Sold out. Imitasjoner. Landbruksforlaget. Sold out.
Ørretjakt (trout hunting) Landbruksforlaget. This book was written to move the focus away from the flies, which had gotten a very strong focus in modern fly fishing (including my writings), to presenting the fly. It is not that the fly does not matter, but the most important part of imitating an insect is to present the fly rightly. It is of course not a matter of one or the other, but both. It was written right after I had Imitasjoner published, when I discovered that a lot of people were more occupied by having the right fly than knowing how to present it. The book has a lot of beautiful drawings by Johs. Fredriksen to show how to solve different problems when presenting a fly on a river. It is about the magic of hunting for that one special trout. The book has also been illustrated with a lot of pictures from Norwegian rivers and lakes. It is almost sold out.
96 Sterke fluer som flyter (96 Strong Flies that Floats) Landbruksforlaget. This is my first contribution to Landbruksforlagets 96-series of books. I did not want to tie all the 96 different flies by myself, but wanted a book which shows the difference in flies from different tiers. The flies are tied by me and by famous and not so famous fly tiers from Norway and around the world. The reason the book is called flies that float, and not dry flies is because I wanted to include imitations of the hatching insects meant to be floating in the film and not on top of it. Among the tiers are Doug Swisher, Gary and Jason Borger, Oliver Edwards, John Goddard, Nadica and Igor Stancev and a lot of others.
96 sterke nymfer (96 Strong Nymphs) Landbruksforlaget. This is my 2nd contribution to the 96-series books. As in the other book I have assembled flies from a lot of Norwegian and international tiers, many of the same as in the previous book. I have used what I call the “extended definition” of nymphs and have included scuds, leaches, worms etc. Among the tiers here are Doug Swisher, Gary and Jason Borger, John Goddard, Oliver Edwards, Nadica and Igor Stancev etc.
